Sony’s deal with thatgamecompany has run out but it appears to have a new arty-PSN game waiting in the wings. The Unfinished Swan was recently revealed with a trailer showing an extremely intriguing gameplay mechanic in a minimalist world. The game centres round a swan that escapes from a painting after which you much chase. The world however isn’t readily visible and the main character shoots blobs of black paint to allow the world to materialise in pieces at a time. It appears to be quite similar to a first person shooter in that regard, although Portal 2’s gels may be a more apt comparison. Ian Dallas, the creative director at Giant Sparrow, said: “The painting a white world stuff is actually just the first 15 minutes. After that, things get really weird.”
The game was built with the help of a member of Sony Santa Monica’s God of War team after the Giant Sparrow team signed a deal with Sony to make the game exclusive to the PSN. The deal also offered them more funding and office space. It does look to be a very interesting game, and if Sony can carve a niche out for its downloadable faire as being high-brow and thought provoking it can really set itself apart from the XBLA.
