NPD Reports July 2011 US Video Game Sales, Worst Month Since Oct 2006

Last month retail sales for video games in the U.S. ended up at their lowest point since October 2006, according to a NPD report released last night. Overall new retail sales for hardware, software, and accessories totaled $707 million, a decline of 26% year over year.

NPD analyst Anita Frazier stated that even though retail sales were down the growth in other consumer spending in the sector should result in 2011 showing growth over 2010, “New physical retail sales of hardware, software and accessories accounted for 69% of the total consumer spend on the industry in Q1. We have measured some remarkable growth in other ways that consumers are acquiring content, including digital sales of full games and add-on content, mobile games, and social network gaming. Growth in these areas, combined with a flat to modest decline in new physical sales should result in 2011 showing growth over 2010.”

New retail sales of video game hardware in July totaled $229 million, down 29% over July 2010. Nintendo took both the top selling hardware spot with the DS [exact sales numbers for the DS were not available at the time this article was published] and the bottom position with the 3DS [exact sales numbers not know, estimated to be less than 114,000]. Microsoft’s Xbox 360 was the top selling console with 277,000 units sold (down 37.5% year over year). The Nintendo Wii was the second highest selling console at 190,000 units (down 25% year over year), followed by the PS3 at 148,000 units (a decline of 31% from last year).

Sales for new retail software were $336.2 million (down 17% from July 2010) with only 8 games selling over the 100,000 mark (down from 19 games last year). Software sales data for July 2011 is as follows:
