Angry Birds (iPhone) Review

Brutal Gamer reviews Angry Birds.

I have to admit, the title ‘Angry Birds‘ doesn’t give you any indication of what the game is about.  But it’s proving quite popular on the Apple Apps store, so we figured we’d give this a shot and see what it’s all about.

Angry Birds is a 2D physics based puzzle game developed by Rovio Mobile, and it functions pretty much like a 2D version of Boom Blox on the Wii.  A group of birds have had their eggs stolen by a gang of green pigs, so the birds decide to get revenge by trying to kill as many of the pigs as possible.

The levels consist of a number of pigs hiding inside structures made of various materials, mainly wood, ice and stone.  You are presented with a set number of birds and a slingshot.  You have to use said slingshot to throw the birds at the stuctures to knock them down and take the pigs out.  The set number of birds means you need to plan out how you’re going to clear the levels.

The birds themselves come in a number of different types with an ability that is activated by tapping the screen while the birds are in mid-flight.  For example, the black birds explode, and the blue birds split into 3 and come hurtling down.  When you have mixed bird types, they will be given to you in a certain order, adding an extra layer of strategy.

There is only a single player mode in the game.  However, this does consist of over 60 levels, so there is plenty for you to do.  And the game is very challenging with a nice steady difficulty curve.  It’s rare for you to blitz one level and then hit a wall in the next.  The game is also a lot of fun, and anyone who has played Boom Blox will feel right at home with this one.

Overall, the game is of high quality.  The game looks pleasing and the physics works really well, and the puzzles are very well designed.  The controls are as simple as they need to be, and you can easily kill a lot of time with this.

FINAL THOUGHTS
Angry Birds is a fun, well designed and pleasant looking puzzle game.  What it lacks in game modes, it makes up for in the sheer amount of levels available.  If you liked Boom Blox, you’ll like this as well.  If you’re not sure whether this is for you, there is a free ‘Lite’ version of the game, and for only 59p, the full version of the game is quite frankly a bargain.  Highly recommended.
