Bayonetta (Xbox 360) Review

Brutal Gamer’s review of SEGA’s Bayonetta for Xbox 360.

The New Year has begun with a flying start, SEGA’s Bayonetta being the first major multiplatform title of 2010, coming out weeks before massive exclusives like Mass Effect 2 and Heavy Rain.  Bayonetta is making its debut appearance, tearing its way into the fairly-already crowded hack n slash market. How will this heroine hold up against the other big boys, like Devil May Cry and God of War? Read on to find out!

In the game, you play as the skin-tight, leather wearing, long legged lady known as Bayonetta – who at first, you can’t help but think she’s been spending way too much time in the S&M section of Ann Summers. It seems that Bayonetta has had a bit of trouble in her past where two clans; the Umbra Witch’s (who Bayonetta is a part of) and the Lumen Sages, they then managed to annihilate each other.  Soon enough, it skips back to present day where you learn that Bayonetta has been rived from the bottom of a lake and has an unfortunate pact with the devil meaning she has to constantly destroy angels to stop the devil from dragging her ass back to hell.

Throughout the game, you’re following the information which is given to you through the conversations you have with Enzo and what Bayonetta starts to remember through flashbacks at certain key moments during the game. It must be added that, personally, I think Bayonetta has one of the strangest voices in games for a long time; I don’t have it, nor do I like it, it must be the old school English voice which I’m a bit funny about.

After some time with the game, you find yourself being put into awkward situations from the games camera angle and in game cut scenes. The odd places the camera is constantly placed, makes you think that the game is trying to arouse you in some odd-way, yet all it does is make you feel incredibly awkward and nervous about people walking in while you playing the game, and them thinking that you’re watching some form of weird erotica.

If you’ve seen the trailers or screenshots of the game, you’d instantly assume the game was another Hack n slash, and really, I don’t think anyone can blame you, as I thought the same. Once you’ve played the game for a few minutes, you instantly realise it simply isn’t – the amount of different combinations and moves within your power are truly mind boggling. Plus being able to add things like witch time (Bayonetta’s version of bullet-time) and torture attacks into the equation, you’ve got a lot of things to play around with. The weapons acquired also add to the arsenal, the guns on each one of the four limbs are a lethal weapon.

Throughout your time playing Bayonetta, you’ll be greeted by a wide range of enemies, from small floating enemies to giant beasts which you can only damage from hitting them in a certain designated weak spot. The characters you fight come in at such a variation, you constantly have to change your style of fighting, that you never got bored of it. As well as the variation in combat style, Sonic fans will be happy to know that the legendary rings are back (not the exact ones), collecting these bad boys will let you buy certain things such as health lollipops.

I can tell you right now, that Bayonetta is one of the craziest games I’ve ever played – and I’m a fan of the Katamari series. What other games have a lead character whose hair opens a portal to hell, which allows a demon to come flying through it to practically eat the enormous boss you were fighting alive? Yeah… it is that crazy – and that’s another reason why I bloody love it.

Before you ask: No, there is no multiplayer for Bayonetta, don’t be disappointed just yet though – the amount of replay value the game has is more than enough to keep people’s attention for weeks, even months. I’m not the sort of person who likes to grind in a game to collect items as I just find it repetitive, but with Bayonetta I never found myself getting bored trying to collect more crazy weapons due to there being so many options to mix n match to change the experience.

Final Thoughts

Kratos, Dante and Nero, watch your back – as this is one, old-school bitch you really don’t want to fuck with. This is the first major release of 2010 and it’s already raising the quality bar which most platform exclusive titles don’t even manage to do. I will happily stand by my statement of the game being a perfect blend between graphics, gameplay and storytelling, not only making this one of the best games of the year already, but one of the best games of this generation. Yet it doesn’t change the fact that I think certain aspects of the character and camera should of been changed, and a lot less innuendo filled.
