A “Revolution” in handheld gaming

The makers of some of the finest point & click adventures think “small”

As anyone know I LOVE point and click games.  Hell I have been addicted to them since getting my mitts on Monkey Island, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Operation Stealth and Lure of the Temptress.  Well the fine makers of Lure made a comeback last year with the DS version of their masterwork “Broken Sword”.  Our review was most favourable and a few conversations with Charles Cecil, MD at Revolution ensued basically gushing my love for his games and badgering about when to expect something else – “Wait and see, something will be announced in July” he said to me… I nearly gave up hope until today.

News came thick and fast around mid-day today that Revolution are setting up a new arm entitled Revolution Pocket.  This concern will handle all forms of mobile gaming – ie Android, IPhone, PSPGo etc.

So here is the presser itself:-

A Revolution in pocket gaming

Acclaimed York-based developer to enter digital download market with original and classic titles available for iPhone, iPod touch, Android, PSP Go and other online stores

30th July 209: Acclaimed developer Revolution Software has announced a new division dedicated to creating and publishing narrative-based handheld entertainment specifically for formats which support online and over-the-air digital distribution.

Titled ‘Revolution Pocket’, this division aims to develop and release both new and classic titles from Revolution Software, designed to take advantage of the unique gaming capabilities of modern handhelds such as iPhone, iPod touch, Android, PSP Go, DSi Shop and others.

Beneath A Steel Sky – Remastered is the first title being developed by the division. Launching initially for iPhone and iPod touch and then rolling out across other handheld formats, this renewed and revamped take on the classic home computer adventure game introduces new features which will establish the game as the definitive adventure for a whole new ‘touch’ generation.

The game builds on the original, featuring stunning new animated movies from Dave Gibbons, co-creator of Watchmen. As well as a new context-sensitive help system, tailored to both the novice and the seasoned adventure player, the game now boasts higher quality audio than ever before.

“The adventure genre is undergoing a renaissance, and we’re thrilled to be bringing a revamped and remastered version of this classic adventure to a whole new audience,” says Charles Cecil, founder of Revolution Software. Digital distribution has changed the game for developers, and it’s great to be able to communicate directly with our audience. Revolution has a sizeable, passionate fan base which we value enormously. By tackling development and publishing duties ourselves, we can strengthen our relationship with them and retain complete commercial and creative freedom – not just in terms of content, but in terms of distribution and, crucially, pricing. The model allows us to ensure that our games offer incredible value for money. We’re bringing high-quality, intelligent, narrative-based gaming to a whole new platform – some owners of which will have enjoyed the games before, and others who will be experiencing our titles for the very first time – and that’s something I find tremendously exciting.

“Beneath A Steel Sky – Remastered is just the start of what we want to do. We’ll be announcing more Revolution Pocket titles soon – some of which people will recognise, others which will be wholly original. But our aim with whatever title we release is to ensure we offer a different type of game to those currently available, illustrating that modern handheld games don’t have to be disposable – they can be engrossing, entertaining and intelligent.”

Revolution Pocket aims to release Beneath A Steel Sky – Remastered through the App Store for iPhone and iPod touch during Autumn 2009, pricing to be announced.

Ends

I for one am super excited about Beneath a Steel Sky coming to any platform so we will keep an eye out for further details.  If we are lucky I may even be able to twist Mr Cecil’s arm and get some Q & A going so check back soon.
