Dead Space To Be Brought To The Big Screen

Eagle Eye’s D.J. Caruso has been snapped up to direct a movie version of EA’s horror title, Dead Space.

Producers of the project have been taking possible scripts from writers, with the intention of beginning work on the film before 2010. Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey, partners of Temple Hill, are lined up to produce. Smart move, as they are also set to be producing a live-action adaptation of Gears of War, another video game to be made into a movie.

However, it seems that Dead Space isn’t the only EA franchise that is in the process of being cinematised. Five games in total from EA are to be made into films. Universal Studios are working with EA to produce both an Army of Two & a Dante’s Inferno film. The Sims is set to be cinematised, and a Mass Effect film is also in the pipeline.

With the film Gamer, in which people can control human beings as players in a video game, set to be released this year, and the news that Sam Raimi intends on bringing the popular MMORPG, World of Warcraft to the big screen, it seems that the general consensus within the film industry is that video gaming is now a massively popular and profitable media platform, and that cinema is a big way of tapping into it.

No word yet on a release date for the Dead Space film adaptation, although technically this would be the second Dead Space, after Dead Space: Downfall, a straight-to-DVD animated feature film, was released last year.
