Battlefield 1943 (Xbox 360) Review
The review for Battlefield 1943 on Xbox 360, read me!
DICE, the people responsible for the Frostbite powered epic that is Battlefield: Bad Company have recently released a little something different, to keep the fans content so they have time to concentrate on more important issues, such as BF:BC2 and the recently released “Battlefield Heros“.
Battlefield 1943 is set on some remote contested islands, as the world is nearing the end of WWII. The title follows the familiar Allied and Axis forces as they battle across 3 large, (Frostbite-Powered) maps in the everlasting pursuit of Online Only territory and domination.
Battlefield 1943 will be instantly familiar to anyone who is a fan of the series, and the familiar controls and easy learning curve make it a game accessible to both hardcore fans and casual gamers alike, with gameplay being consistent and fun, the only way to improve your experience would be to go in with a couple of friends and bring a beer.
The 1200 Microsoft point arcade game giving players a choice 3 classes, 3 maps and a whole 4 different types of vehicle to play with. The game also sports a small but balanced variety of weapons, including SMG’s, rifles, snipers, rocket launchers and more.
Battlefield 1943′s good points don’t stop there though, the arcade title also features party support, challenges, achievements and even a usefull AND optional tutorial!
The games graphics aren’t particularly special, but for a 500(ish) meg download, nobody can really expect miracles. But saying that, you’ll find yourself thinking that the graphics and everything aren’t particularly bad… its just that DICE seem to have made an arcade game that’s big and impressive enough to be confused with an actual big disc title…
But to be honest, I’m just picking at minor faults in an otherwise enjoyable game now, and the graphical elements to the game are soon forgotten when you’re having fun and getting involved.
DICE have also managed to pull together some damn fine sound FX, although they can only really show off there potential and be properly enjoyed with a sound system. Running towards enemies and hearing the odd pang of bullets is exciting, and when you think your safe and are casually sniping away….you suddenly start hearing the literal scream, of a tortured engine… a noise so un-nerving that it could only possibly be coming from an aircraft your 80% sure is not your own and getting rapidly closer with every curse you think up and say to try keep your streak going.
Finally, a few points and things need to be said or highlighted. Battlefield 1943 is by no means a bad game by anyone’s description, but after playing for an hour or so you begin to miss the variety of Bad Company. It doesn’t exactly take from the game, but the thought whinges at you and could probably reduce the lasting appeal of the WWII setting.
Another big point, bordering on an issue, is the lack of single-player support. 1200 points for a game is alot, and for anyone without a Gold membership the game doesnt cater at all for the less competitive or social gamers.
