How E3 influenced my choices for Holiday season ‘09 Preview Image

I like to think I am fairly astute when it comes to picking the diamonds from the turds when games are in production. With that said I am first to admit I can be wrong – 50 Cent Blood on the Sand looked like a trainwreck but turned out to be fun and playable. So with that in mind I took stock of what games I was most psyched for BEFORE E3 and what titles now float my top 5 boat. Whilst indulging in the time of reflection I thought I would ask my fellow BG’ers what their thought were too.

Keats

Before E3

1 )Assassins Creed 2
2) Mass Effect 2
3) Secret Nintendo games
4) Possible Ghost Recon
5) Splinter Cell Conviction

After E3

1) Assassins Creed 2- Was in Venice this weekend and after watched the trailer. Its possible t o map exactly where he fly which is awesome. Also smoke bomb ftw.
2) Mass Effect 2- Awesome in a bottle.
3) Splinter Cell Conviction- we knew it was going to be good, but not Bourne good…
4) Crackdown 2- 4 way dumpster fun
5) Modern Warfare 2- snowmobile and the return of Soap? Yes please.

Special mention

Shadow Complex- Looks hella fun!

Dropped

Metroid Other M (previously secret Nintendo game)- gets a resounding meh from me
No Ghost Recon so dropped for obvious reasons.

Games I should be excited about but am not

Dragon Age- next to the polish of Mass Effect, this seems decidedly average. My interest has continued to drop since its badassification
Final Fantasy XIII- Ill be happy when it gets here, I promise
God of War III- So sue me

Ognawk

Before E3

1) Modern Warfare 2
2) The Legend of Zelda : Spirit Tracks
3) Pikmin 3
4) Final Fantasy XIII
5) MAG

After E3

1) Crackdown 2 – Only got into the original Crackdown recently, and it’s immense fun. 4-player co-op for the sequel? I’m sold!
2) Modern Warfare 2 – As with Crackdown, I got into the original Modern Warfare pretty late on. I don’t normally look forward to shooters, but this is looking many kinds of excellent.
3) Super Mario Galaxy 2 – The trailer may have looked like more of the same with added Yoshi, but considering how much I loved the original, this is no bad thing.
4) Final Fantasy XIII – Haven’t played a Final Fantasy game since IX, but playing Lost Odyssey had made me look forward to this game. Will probably eat a lot of my time.
5) MAG – Will be interesting to see if this can truly live up to it’s ambitious multiplayer, but if it works, it’ll be special.

Gone from the list :

The Legend of Zelda : Spirit Tracks – I am still looking forward to this game, but there are some games out there that I am looking forward to a lot more.
Pikmin 3 – I thought this was a shoo-in for E3, but there was not a word from Nintendo, which was disappointing.

Moosehound

Before E3

1) Uncharted 2
2) Modern Warfare 2
3) Heavy Rain
4) Bioshock 2
5) Asassains Creed 2

After E3

1) Uncharted 2 – First game was amazingly good and the 2nd looks to improve that and address a few of the niggles (not sure about the new Urban setting though!)
2) Modern Warfare 2 – Well DUH! Who WON’T have this in their list this season!
3) Professor Layton and Pandora’s Box – Ah man I have been waiting for this one! I even tried to get on with the Jap import! This will ROCK!
4) Heavy Rain – still looks amazing I am just not 100% sure on the quicktime heavy mechanics.
5) Splinter Cell : Conviction – I hate SC games – H.A.T.E them! But this looked damn good and has me intrigued! If it plays half as well as it looks then I’m on board!

Gone from the list :
6) Bioshock 2 – this was purely in the list due to the pedigree of the first game, so far the sequel has done nothing to impress and I am hearing bad things about the multiplayer element – please, please, please don’t fuck this game up!
7) Asassains Creed 2 – I just still can not get excited about an AC sequel based on the limited amounts of gameplay shown – I just hope they address the issues from the first sufficiently as it had great potential.
