New Wii Classic Controller Pro Unveiled
Nintendo’s Japanese website has just revealed a new design for the Wii’s Classic Controller add-on. This new design adds prongs to the sides of the controller and looks thicker and chunkier. Also, the two Z buttons next to the shoulder buttons on the current design have gone in favour of a second set of shoulder buttons. Essentially, the Classic Controller has gone from resembling a SNES controller to resembling a PlayStation DualShock.
The new design is scheduled to launch in Japan this summer. It will almost certainly attach to the Wiimote just like the current one does. There has been speculation as to what Nintendo’s purpose is for releasing this new design, such as whether there will be a lot more N64 games released for the Virtual Console (something I really hope will happen) or if there will be a shift to focus on more traditional controls for future Wii titles.
In my own personal opinion, I don’t think there is a real purpose other than just a new design. To me, it does look somewhat ugly, bulky and cumbersome. Kind of like the old Classic Controller sprouted some stubby legs and gained weight. Still, it could change in the next few months, so I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
