Gaming Going Green

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) who currently regulate the efficiency of home appliances such as washing machines, have announced plans to force all videogame consoles to be greener in 2010.

The plans put forward by the EPA will see compulsory additions of auto-switchoff, power management and a sleep mode all be incorporated into Wiis, PS3s and 360s.

A statement from them read as follows:

It is EPA’s hope that this approach will give game console manufacturers design lead time, while also ensuring Energy Star qualified game consoles will offer consumers significant energy savings

Quite how “Auto-switch off” will work when we all leave things on to download or watch DVDs is a different matter but we shall see I guess.

It is also worth noting that this is just a proposed plan rather than anything concrete at this stage.

Do consoles need to be greener? Fly on over (as economically as possible) to the forums and discuss.
