Why So Serious About “Dark Knight” Game Tie-In?

The actor Gary Oldman recently revealed that he had seen footage of an upcoming game tie-in of “The Dark Knight”, the latest film in the Christopher Nolan rebooted series.

Oldman, who plays the role of James Gordon in the film (later, more famously known as Commissioner Gordon) made the comments in an interview regarding the games cinematic approach – much like the recent Jason Bourne game.

But does the game exist?

Whilst deep down I know it will most likely be awful, all evidence points to the fact that there isn’t even going to be a game. At least, not a tie-in. I am almost positive it would have either been announced at E3 or already be released to tie in with the cinematic release. I for one sadly know that I would have definitely purchased the game yesterday having just seen the film but would not do the same if I had just watched the DVD. My point? Hype. Hype sells game tie-ins and there just isn’t the same hype level come a DVD release.

A rumor regarding Pandemic developing a Batman game was circulating earlier this year but what with their already jam packed release schedule this fall, the Batman game would also miss the DVD release.

If the game does indeed exist then it is far more likely to follow in the same vein as the recent WANTED:Game announcement, perhaps following on from the film or better yet, take place in between Batman Begins and The Dark Knight.

It could likely be he was talking about the Lego Batman as he did not actually state he had recorded any dialogue (as previously reported) just that he had “seen” the game. It could also be some kind of Flash game or DVD game to be shipped with the Blu-Ray/DVD release. With a summer blockbuster a game tie-in would not have been a last minute thought. The movie bosses are well aware these games perform well and will have therefore already put a game into production if they wanted one in my opinion.

The game could well exist and be a standalone adventure, but a tie-in? I think there is more chance of a Dark Knight sequel…and we both know that isn’t going to happen.

In case you missed the clip the first time around, I have included it below:

(and what is with the shit interviewer? She looks bored and very unprofessional…although admittedly she does perk up at the end and I am going off-topic)
