Top 10 Games Of the Sixth Gaming Era
Here you go guys and gals, the first instalment in my six part ‘Top 10…’ feature, so let’s get this started.
If your unaware of what the sixth gaming era was I will quickly sum it up for you; Sony’s Playstation 2, Dreamcast, Nintendo’s GameCube and Microsoft’s Xbox combined make the sixth generation. The last generation of games and consoles have been one of the most successful to date.
Anyway lets get this thing rolling, read on to find my top ten games of the sixth gaming era.
10 – Super Mario Sunshine (GameCube)
I doubt most people will agree with me here, but this really game hit a sweet spot. I found the game so unique and so much fun that it had to be a winner. It was the only Mario game on the GameCube which ate a lot of my time by going back through the story numerous times. I would happily go back to this game if I was given an opportunity as it was a blast.
9 – Super Smash Bro’s Melee (GameCube)
I was one of the few unlucky people who missed the SSB on the N64 due to most my time was taken up by playing Golden Eye, so this time round I made sure I owned the game and boy was it worth it. Oh how I spent so many drunken nights beating the shit out of Kirby, it felt so good. The game was so fluid and fast paced, it was good to play no matter who you were and whether you just felt like playing one round or a whole story it was a great experience either way.
8 – Grand Theft Auto 3 (Playstation 2)
People will most likely argue this one with me saying that San Andreas was better but in my opinion it isn’t. The reason why I think that GTA3 is better is because it was the first game I played on the Playstation 2 (so it has sentimental value). It was just such a thrilling experience with the opening cut scene on the bridge and you realize for the first time you now have a full 3d playground which is living and breathing around you.
7 – Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker (GameCube)
When I saw the first few trailers/screen shots for this game my hopes weren’t to high for it because of how the style of the game had changed (quite a dramatic change that’s for sure!) Thankfully, I was wrong. Story line was brilliant, the graphics were a really nice sight and I also discovered I really like cell shaded games from playing this. This is my 2nd favorite Legend of Zelda game (1st being Ocarina of time off course.)
6 – Final Fantasy X (Playstation 2)
Over the 3 or so Final Fantasy games released on the PS2, FFX was easily the best one; I am also willing to say that I preferred this one to ff8. Graphically the game was just stunning and truly shown what sort of power the PS2 had. The story and game play of FFX made the game one of the best role playing games released during the sixth era.
5 – Halo 2 (Xbox)
What a surprise a Halo game in the top 10, I would just like to clarify before I start I am not a Halo fan boy. The main reason why this game is in my top 10 is because it pretty much made online console gaming what is today. The game was a brilliant place to find competitive gaming whether its at a tournament or just on matchmaking. Halo 2 showed everyone what the xbox was capable of doing, and how much fun online gaming could be..
4 – Fable (Xbox)
Ah Fable, how I loved every minute of playing your story mode and how I spent an insane amount of hours trying to figure out how to get Excalibur. The game had a huge amount of content on the disk and a brilliant story story aswell (kudos to the writers!). Before Fable I wasn’t a fan of role playing games but this game honestly made me fall in love with the genre which is why it’s the 4th best game in the sixth era.
3 – Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (Playstation 2)
This is the main game which got me to purchase a PS2 after being a huge fan of Metal Gear Solid for the original Playstation. It was the best game on the PS2 and the best MGS game in the sixth era. The game had an incredibly addictive story, every time you turned it off you just wanted to go back and play it more. The game had stunning graphics for its time thats why its my 3rd favorite game in the sixth gaming era.
2 – Resident Evil 4 (GameCube)
Although Resident Evil was ported over to the PS2, I still preferred this version, graphically it shown what the GameCube was capable of doing (and it was fucking impressive). I played through this game numerous times on the different difficulties and did not get bored of it. Resident Evil 4 is easily the best game in the series.
1 – Halo 1 (Xbox)
What is the first thing which comes to mind when someone mentions Halo 1? If your answer is a brilliant story with incredible graphics for its time, you are correct. I spent a ridiculous amount of time on this game playing 4 player free for all on sidewinder, the game never became old. To this day its still one of my favourite local multiplayer games and it always will be, this game truly shows how a FPS should be and you can see things inspired by Halo 1 today.
So there you go you have now seen my favourite games of this generation of consoles, check back next week for the next installment of ‘Top 10…’

I do not agree with you on Fable. I loved the game, but looking back on it I can see all of the problems there were with it. It was no where near the interactive world that it was said to be, and the whole “your playing style changes your character” thing was BS. Yeah my guy has horns now, but all I have to do is go pay a lot of money at a shrine and everything I have done is wiped. Also, I STILL can’t see why the hell that even if you are the evilest guy in the world, everyone still expects you to save everyone at the end.

Meh don’t like Mario.. that game was just ridiculous imo.
I think prince of persia deserves a mention, was a sick game.
And tekken 4.
Played all thsoe games apart from MGS… Not sure fable should be in there though, the lastability of the game was rubbish, i finished the game the same day i bought it.
